Sketchbook Scribing

As an artist I thrive on learning new things. When I am at a class, a conference, or a political event like a march, I take a lot of notes -- not just on what is being said, but on who is saying it and how. Later I scan the notes and color them so other people can read and learn from them too.

I can also scribe big in front of a room, to illustrate a conversation as it happens and keep an audience engaged and on track. I perform this kind of scribing with my employer 8works, as well as on a volunteer basis with nonprofits like SURJ Sacred Heart.

I scribed these moments and conversations at the 2019 Queers & Comics Conference in New York City for The Comics Journal.

Elizabeth Warren Town Hall, May 2019

I drew this scribe at an Elizabeth Warren town hall in Oakland in May 2019. I had to get to the park four hours early to make sure I was near the front, but it was worth it — she has my vote! As a bonus, Elizabeth Warren’s official team retweeted this image.

Netroots Nations Notes: 2016 and 2015

Netroots Nation is a yearly annual conference for progressives, drawing nearly 3,000 attendees. Here are the visual notes I took for the two years I went, including a Black Lives Matter march in St. Louis and a march against Joe Arpaio in Phoenix (click to enlarge):
