Artist Statement
In 2023, amidst a series of life-rocking transitions, painting became my practice of both creating and letting go. I am moved by landscapes that show the timeless right alongside the ephemeral —canyons with shadows moving across them, mountains freshly covered in snow, or a mature cottonwood losing its fall leaves. My art faithfully describes scenes I observed firsthand, devoid of nostalgia or metaphor. Because they are so straightforward the paintings show how my subject looked at one point in time, even as the real world continues to change second by second.
I keep my paintings fresh and intentional by using acrylics on double-primed canvas and a matte varnish. I like that acrylics dry too quickly for me to over-blend or over-work them. I don’t aim for photo realism, but neither do I actively seek abstraction — I paint until the moment I’m describing emerges, then stop. The act of putting my brush down and moving onto the next canvas reminds me again that nothing lasts forever.
About Me
I’m an artist from California, who moved to New Mexico in 2023 to be with a partner and explore a strikingly beautiful natural space. In California I spent a decade building a practice of cartooning, graphic design, storytelling, and graphic facilitation. I published a graphic novel (the Big Book of Bisexual Trials and Errors) that the Advocate called one of the best LGBT graphic novels of 2017. I won a Moth StorySLAM and went on to tell a live story at the Castro Theater in front of 1400 people. My short political comics appeared in The Lily and sometimes the home page of the Washington Post. In my professional life, I honed the skill of “graphic facilitation”, or live visual note taking, and traveled across the country working for business and nonprofit clients. While I am still available for graphic facilitation and design work, I am excited for this new chapter of painting in the Southwest.
