Graphic Facilitation

Salesforce #FutureForce Futures LAB session graphic facilitation

Here is my #graphicfacilitation capture animation from a session with Salesforce's Futures LAB and #futureforce. (posted with permission.) First, I drew live during the session, and then I arranged it in the graphic below, and in an animation (see here.)

Digital Graphic Facilitation

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, I have been doing more and more virtual graphic facilitation using Zoom and Procreate. See examples below:

The Power of Visuals Weekathon 2020

The Power of Visuals Weekathon was a series of online teaching / sharing sessions hosted by Noun & Verb in November 2020. Here are my visual notes from that event.

Sustainable Innovation Forum 2020

I had the pleasure of working with Oliver Wyman to create digital scribes for the Sustainable Innovation Forum 2020, which was all online due to the pandemic. Images shown here with permission from Oliver Wyman.

Whiteboard Scribing

Although I have been taking visual notes in some form since middle school, my first professional / client experience with graphic facilitation was with whiteboard scribing. In this way of working, I scribe on very large whiteboards in front of dozens or hundreds of people as a facilitator lead them in focused discussion. I capture the conversation with a combination of written notes and pictures, to help participants process what was happening in the moment and as a beautiful record of their discussion to view later. Sometimes I also create more detailed drawings on whiteboards away from the facilitator, which can then be wheeled in to show participants at the right time. I also clean, color and edit photographs of the scribes to make sure they are as legible and elegant as possible. Here are a few examples of whiteboard scribing.

Sketchbook Scribing

Sometimes when I’m taking notes at something live and there are no white-boards, but I am in the mood for a tactile scribing experience, I use a large sketchbook and Tombow markers.

Elizabeth Warren Town Hall, May 2019

I drew this scribe at an Elizabeth Warren town hall in Oakland in May 2019. I had to get to the park four hours early to make sure I was near the front, but it was worth it — she has my vote! As a bonus, Elizabeth Warren’s official team retweeted this image.

Netroots Nations Notes: 2016 and 2015

Netroots Nation is a yearly annual conference for progressives, drawing nearly 3,000 attendees. Here are the visual notes I took for the two years I went, including a Black Lives Matter march in St. Louis and a march against Joe Arpaio in Phoenix:
